I'm Jana Hubbs. Welcome to 7th and 8th Grade English and Computer Applications.

7th Grade English is designed to increase the student's ability to read, interpret, and synthesize written material following the Illinois Learning Standards. Students will study the writing process in depth and will do expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing. Grammar will focus on standard English usage including capitalization, punctuation, subject/verb and pronoun/antecendent agreement, subject and object pronouns use, and proper usage of comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs. Students will learn to write a variety of sentences and recognize fragments and run-ons as well as coherence of ideas. Students will learn and apply conventional spelling rules and word origins through spelling tests and practice. In addition, students will implement technology into everyday lessons through the use of wiki pages, email, virtual classrooms, and a Smartboard as well as basic word processing.

In 8th Grade English, we focus on grammar and composition. It includes work with parts of the sentence, sentence structure, and sentence revision. Essays will include the descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive. The general emphasis of the course to provide the student a working knowledge of the communication skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking for everyday use. The course will also incorporate a variety of technology into the everyday curriculum through use of the Smartboard, as well as wiki pages, virtual classrooms, word processing and email.

Computer Applications is fairly new and fun. It is designed to give students a working knowledge of basic computer applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students will apply knowledge to projects for everyday use and will be applied to other formats such as Google Documents. A large component of the class will be to learn the keyboard and practice typing skills. Much of the class is self-paced.
