In Physical Education at the grade school, grades Pre-K through one focus primarily on locomotor movements and body control. Activities contain many balance, strength, and endurance components. Simple manipulative skills such as throwing, rolling, catching, and batting are introduced. The students are taught basic exercises to convey the importance of physical activity to good health.
Classes for grades two and three include three parts: physical fitness, skill development, and lead up games for various sports and lifetime activities. The relationship between physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle is introduced. Teamwork is defined and emphasized in group activities. Sports introduced include: gymnastics, bowling, soccer, flag football, volleyball, and many others.
The three basic parts of the P.E. class continue in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Individual skill work becomes more advanced and team strategy is introduced in team sports. Some testing of physical fitness is conducted so each individual student can evaluate their own condition. An example would be timed running where each individual counts their own laps run. This is then converted so the students can compare their fitness level to their peers around the country using the Presidents Physical Fitness Challenge standards. Along with the sports listed above, students will participate in basketball, pyramids, pickle ball, floor hockey, baseball, kickball, track and field, and many other low organized games.
